Goshka Macuga (Poland)

Magic (slide projection) 2006, 9mins

Goshka Macuga's practice explores traditions of archiving, museum display and public spectacle in ways that disorientate and delight. In previous exhibitions she has provided a total unifying environment for the exhibition of other artists' work, collections of books or curiosities. Once displayed together all these parts then amass into a whole that is part choreography, part collaboration. At Gasworks Gallery in 2003 Macuga commissioned a replica of the 'Picture Room' designed by John Soane for his house in Lincoln Inn Fields. Works by contemporary and historical artists were displayed in a complex sequence of hinged portals creating a gallery within a gallery.

Goshka Macuga, born 1967 Poland, lives and works in London.  Forthcoming solo exhibitions include: Liverpool Biennial, and the 27th Sao Paulo Biennial.  Recent solo exhibitions include: 2005 Goshka Macuga at Kate MacGarry, London, Kabinett der Abstraction, 2003, Bloomberg Space, London, Picture Room, 2003, Gasworks Gallery, London. Forthcoming group exhibitions include: 16th Biella Prize for Engraving (curated by Jeremy Lewison), Museo del Territorio Biellese, Biella, Italy, March - June 2006; Attese Biennale di Ceramica nell' Arte Contemporanea, Museo della Ceramica Manlio Trucco, Albissola Superiore, Italy,  July – September 2006; Mathilda is Calling, Institut Mathildenhöhe, Darmstadt, Germany, July – October 2006.
